Puerto Rico became a US territory in 1898, and people living in Puerto Rico were granted US citizenship in 1917. In 1948 it became recognized as a ‘Commonwealth’ and, in June of this year, the people of Puerto Rico voted overwhelmingly in favor of becoming a state of the US (which would grant them fuller representation and voting rights in Congress and so on, should Congress agree to the proposal).
However, nearly a month after Puerto Rico was hit by hurricanes Irma and Maria, most citizens of this part of our country are still left without electricity or water, along with many other resources needed for survival and rebuilding of their communities. In support of Puerto Rico, the members of the RLC are working together to gather donations.
