Supporting Puerto Rico

October 19, 2017

Puerto Rico became a US territory in 1898, and people living in Puerto Rico were granted US citizenship in 1917. In 1948 it became recognized as a Puerto Rico Flag‘Commonwealth’ and, in June of this year, the people of Puerto Rico voted overwhelmingly in favor of becoming a state of the US (which would grant them fuller representation and voting rights in Congress and so on, should Congress agree to the proposal).

However, nearly a month after Puerto Rico was hit by hurricanes Irma and Maria, most citizens of this part of our country are still left without electricity or water, along with many other resources needed for survival and rebuilding of their communities. In support of Puerto Rico, the members of the RLC are working together to gather donations. If you would like to take part in these efforts, please reach out to Rafael at (413) 219-0658 or rafael@wildfloweralliance.org to talk about possible donations, and where to bring them.

If you would like to send donations directly, these three places are the most reliable we’ve found:

Redidencial Bella Vista
Arecibo, 00612 PR

Volunteers of America of Puerto Rico RRL, Inc. (click here to view)
1606 Ave Manuel Fernandez
Juncos, Santurce PR 00909

La Fondita de Jesus
704 Calle Monserrate
San Juan PR 00907

In many instances, cash donations are the most helpful.

A trustworthy site to make monetary donations is United for Puerto Rico,
which can be found HERE.

The site has been put together by the First Lady of Puerto Rico, Beatriz Rosselló, in collaboration with the private sector. 100% of the proceeds will go to supporting people affected by the hurricanes.
