SUMMARY:Alternatives to Suicide Group Facilitator Training (Wed\, Thurs\, Fri)
DESCRIPTION:The Alternatives to Suicide approach was developed by the Wildflower Alliance in 2009 as one of the only peer-to-peer groups that allows for in-depth discussion of suicidal thoughts. Rather than risk assessment and behavior control\, these groups are based in creating a non-judgmental space in which to break the silence and shame around suicide (and other “taboo” topics.)\n\n\n\nThis training is specifically for people who have personal experience navigating thoughts of suicide. Please reach out for alternative training resources if you do not openly identify with having suicidal thoughts at any point of your life.\n\n\n\nThere are a growing number of Alternatives to Suicide groups in the US and beyond… Join us and be a part of the movement. We strongly encourage you to read the following article before purchasing a ticket for this training: https://www.communitypsychology.com/new-approach-to-suicide/\n\n\n\nTRAINING DATES AND TIMES: Each day of this in-person training will run from 9AM to 5PM at Holyoke Community College in Holyoke\, MA. Training dates are Wednesday\, August 12th\, Thursday\, August 13th and Friday\, August 14th. Attendance on all three days is required to complete this training.\n\n\n\nTRAINING PREREQUISITES: This training is primarily intended for people who have some basic facilitation skills and/or training\, though not absolutely required so long as it is understood that the training is not designed to provide these basic skills. Please come prepared to explore suicide support through a social justice and harm reduction lens. “Alternatives to Suicide” groups operate outside of many of the common assumptions of the current Western medical paradigm.\n\n\n\nPlease contact us at info@wildfloweralliance.org with any questions.\n\n\n\nOTHER IMPORTANT INFO:  This training is open to people who have struggled with suicidal thoughts or attempts themselves. Others who are interested in the Alternatives to Suicide approach\, but who do not have personal experience should look for a When Conversations Turn to Suicide training instead. \n\n\n\nCOST: The Wildflower Alliance does not have dedicated funding to support our many trainings offered to individuals or organizations. We rely on fees from participants to continue this important and difficult work. Participant fees pay our uniquely skilled & experienced trainers\, support ongoing curriculum development\, and help offset the costs of related administrative work. At the same time\, we are committed to making these trainings as accessible as possible to community members committed to our work who are poor\, disabled\, working paycheck-to-paycheck or may not stand to inherit wealth. \n\n\n\nWe know that sometimes it’s hard to know what to pay when offered a sliding scale. We invite you to be honest about what resources you have access to and what you are able to give to reflect the value of this approach in your life and in the world. \n\n\n\nLow Income: $150 – Solidarity rate. For community members committed to our work who are poor\, disabled\, working paycheck-to-paycheck or may not stand to inherit wealth. \n\n\n\nSustain: $275 – Cover most of our costs. For someone able to meet their basic needs with a little extra money leftover.  \n\n\n\nFull Cost: $425 – Support the true value of our training. For people with savings over $5\,000 or ample spending money for non-essentials. \n\n\n\nOrganizational Support: $600 – For organizations (with annual budgets under $1 million) purchasing tickets for employees\, or individuals with access to over $50\,000 in cash or liquid assets. \n\n\n\nRedistribution: $850 – For organizations (with annual budgets over $1 million) purchasing tickets for employees\, or individuals with access to wealth who wish to contribute to the sustainability of our work. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nAccessibility: \n\n\n\n\nHolyoke Community College is on the B23\, P11\, and and R41 bus routes operated by PVTA. For more information\, visit http://www.pvta.com/\n\n\n\nHere is a link with more information about getting to HCC\, including directions: https://www.hcc.edu/about/visit-hcc/getting-here\n\n\n\nDesignated accessible parking is available in Lot G (permit required).\n\n\n\nThe training will be held on the 3rd floor of the Kittredge Center\, which has an elevator and accessible bathrooms. Gender neutral bathrooms are on the 2nd and 4th floor.\n\n\n\n\nExpectations: \n\n\n\n\nParticipants are expected to uphold the Wildflower Alliance Defining Principles\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\nRegister Now

SUMMARY:Alternatives to Suicide Overview
DESCRIPTION:Alternatives to Suicide was developed in 2008 by people who’ve struggled with suicidal thoughts and attempts. It began as a support group and has since grown into a harm reduction approach that can be used by clinicians and other providers\, family members\, peer supporters and anyone else interested in better supporting someone who might be navigating thoughts of killing themself. \n\n\n\nJoin us for this introductory overview on Thursday July 23rd from 11am-3pm Eastern Time. The first half of the session will review the history of and evidence for this approach and some of the fundamental paradigm shifts that it involves. The second half will include discussion of the VCVC dialogue model with role plays to help illustrate how it works. \n\n\n\nPresenters to include VCVC creator\, Caroline Mazel-Carlton! \n\n\n\nPlease note: This training will not be recorded. SUMMARY:Hearing Voices Group Facilitator training
DESCRIPTION:The Hearing Voices Network (HVN) includes over 20 nationally-based networks around the world joined by shared goals and values\, incorporating a fundamental belief that there are many ways to understand the experience of hearing voices and other unusual or extreme experiences. This international collaboration between professionals\, people with lived experience\, and their families works to develop an alternative approach to coping with emotional distress that is empowering and useful to people\, and does not start from the assumption that they have a chronic illness. \n\n\n\nThe Hearing Voices approach offers a non-pathologizing\, open way of understanding and supporting people through the experiences of hearing voices – as well as seeing visions\, holding unusual beliefs\, multiplicity\, and other sensory experiences. This movement understands that hearing voices can be a normal part of human experience with a variety of meanings for people. This approach can be used in peer support groups or any other support context. \n\n\n\nIn Hearing Voices support groups\, each person has a right to their own reality and to share their experiences in their own words. Facilitators do not use diagnostic language and welcome perspectives beyond bio-chemical frameworks. Participants in this training will learn about facilitating and sustaining Hearing Voices support groups\, as well as common myths about voice-hearing\, a framework for being in conversation with someone who is sensing things that others do not\, the links between trauma (including systemic oppression) and voice-hearing\, the importance of power sharing\, and more. \n\n\n\nThis training will be held on: \n\n\n\nTuesday\, June 16th \n\n\n\nWednesday\, June 17th \n\n\n\nThursday\, June 18th \n\n\n\nAll training days will run from 9am-5pm\, in-person in Florence\, Massachusetts. \n\n\n\nReading homework may be assigned ahead of time and/or during the class. Attendance at all sessions is required to complete the training. (Note: Participants are able to miss up to two hours of the training not including breaks\, and still receive a certificate of completion. Some make-up work may be required.) \n\n\n\nTRAINING PREREQUISITES: This training is primarily intended for people who have some basic facilitation skills and/or training\, though not absolutely required so long as it is understood that the training is not designed to provide these basic skills. You should have an active interest in starting an Hearing Voices group or supporting an existing one. \n\n\n\nOTHER IMPORTANT INFO: It is not required to have lived experience of voices\, visions or unusual beliefs to facilitate Hearing Voices groups. However\, a co-facilitation model is recommended and involvement of individuals with lived experience is strongly encouraged. \n\n\n\n\nREGISTER HERE

SUMMARY:Young People & Suicide: A Training for Family and Friends
DESCRIPTION:Featuring Cindy Hadge & Sasha Dunbar \n\n\n\n–How is supporting young people around suicide different than supporting adults? \n\n\n\n-How can I better understand what my loved one is going through? \n\n\n\n-What qualifies as a crisis? \n\n\n\n-What alternatives exist to conventional clinical mental health responses? \n\n\n\nThis online three-hour workshop on Friday July 11th from 1-4pm Eastern Time will explore these questions and more\, offering critical insights for supporting young people navigating feelings\, thoughts and actions around suicide. SUMMARY:A Harm Reduction Approach to Self-Injury (Tues/Thurs)
DESCRIPTION:An online 8-hour workshop applying the philosophy of harm reduction to the topic of self-injury. This workshop will take place via Zoom on Tuesday\, June 24th and Thursday\, June 26th\, from 12-4pm Eastern Time (11am-3pm Central / 10am-2pm Mountain / 9am-1pm Pacific). \n\n\n\nMany trainings on self-injury are ineffective because they focus on pathologizing the experience and trying to force people to stop. In this workshop\, we will embrace harm reduction philosophy to go deeper into the context of self-injury on both an individual and social level. We will also explore how letting go of force and coercion can open new avenues of support. This includes managing our own fears so they don’t get in the way or drive us to do something that is more harm than help!  \n\n\n\nThis workshop is open to anyone including clinicians\, peer supporters\, family members\, first responders and others interested in learning how to better support a person who is self-injuring.  \n\n\n\nThis workshop will cover:  \n\n\n\n\nReasons why people self-injure\n\n\n\nDifferent types of self-injury\n\n\n\nHow to effectively support people who are self-injuring\n\n\n\n\nA note about cost: Tickets are available on a sliding scale. SUMMARY:Anti-Oppression Training (Wed\, Thurs\, Fri)
DESCRIPTION:Join the Wildflower anti-oppression training team as they offer a three-day anti-oppression training. This training aims to examine what being a “good” person really means\, how to understand privilege and use it for good\, effectively owning and apologizing for your missteps\, and strategies for interrupting situations where people are saying or doing things rooted in oppressive ways of being and thinking. \n\n\n\nThe training aims to be highly interactive\, and requires a willingness to self-reflect\, sit in discomfort\, and work together toward building a better world. \n\n\n\nWednesday\, October 23rd\, 9am to 5pm \n\n\n\nThursday\, October 24th\, 9am to 5pm \n\n\n\nFriday\, October 25th\, 9am to 5pm \n\n\n\nWhat can you expect from this training? \n\n\n\nDay 1 – Concepts \n\n\n\nOn the first day\, we will look at concepts like privilege\, “default design\,” internalized oppression\, and how stereotpes are born in engaging ways that encourage self-exploration. We will also talk about how we know what we know (i.e.\, how we’ve each developed our worldview\, and influencing factors). \n\n\n\nDay 2 – Integration \n\n\n\nOn day two\, we will begin to integrate some of what we talked about on day one into bigger picture conversations. We’ll dig a little deeper with what’s influencing our different perspectives on the world\, look at the common parts shared between different forms of systemic oppression\, and discuss intent/impact and what makes a good apology. \n\n\n\nDay 3 – Application \n\n\n\nOn day three\, we’ll learn about different interrupting strategies (including how to interrupt in situations volatile situations as well as in situations where you want or need to maintain your relationship). We’ll also talk about the differences between (and utility of) calling in and calling out\, and get lots of practice in putting those strategies to work. We’ll conclude the training by looking at\, discussing\, and expanding upon direct actions we can take to change the world. \n\n\n\nThroughout all three days\, we will make use of small group work\, individual worksheets\, and video clips to bring everything to life. You can even expect to join in on a quiz-style gameshow (with prizes!) after lunch on day 2 based on the history timelines we will provide. \n\n\n\nThis training will be held at the Massachusetts Green High Performance Computing Center at 100 Bigelow St. in Holyoke\, MA. \n\n\n\n\nRegister Now

SUMMARY:Book Talk: Your Consent Is Not Required
DESCRIPTION:Learn more about the use of force in psychiatric care from author and investigative journalist\, Rob Wipond. \n\n\n\nBerkshire Athenaeum\, Pittsfield’s Public Library\, 1 Wendell Avenue Pittsfield\, MA 01201 \n\n\n\nREGISTRATION IS APPRECIATED\, BUT NOT REQUIRED. \n\n\n\nFREE EVENT\, DONATIONS WELCOME!! \n\n\n\nJoin journalist and author\, Rob Wipond\, as he shares some of his book\, “YOUR CONSENT IS NOT REQUIRED: The Rise In Psychiatric Detentions\, Forced Treatment\, and Abusive Guardianships\,” and the research upon which it was built. Hear the evidence and ask tough questions as we come together to explore the issues of force and coercion in psychiatric care. Recent developments related to use of force in Massachusetts will also be discussed. \n\n\n\nOrganized by the Wildflower Alliance. \n\n\n\nContinuing Ed Credits for LMHCs & Social Workers requested. \n\n\n\nTo read more about the book\, click HERE! \n\n\n\nABOUT THE AUTHOR: \n\n\n\nRob Wipond began his career working in performance art and theatre. His stand-up political rock comedy with Allen Booth\, “When I’m Big”\, ventured into such venues as Toronto’s famed El Mocambo and Bamboo Club. CBC Radio Sunday Showcase/Monday Night Playhouse produced his satirical play\, “Gypsy Moth”. \n\n\n\nHe was for ten years a regular columnist and feature writer for Focus\, and now often contributes investigative journalism to the science\, psychiatry\, and community web magazine and blogging community Mad In America. His writing has appeared in more than a hundred varied outlets\, including Adbusters\, Chatelaine\, the European Journal of Law and Technology\, and Queens Quarterly. And he’s almost certainly the only writer to have ever published in both the medical journal BMJ and as a one-time member of the notorious “usual gang of idiots” for the infamous MAD Magazine–which probably sums up his work more than anything else on this web page. \n\n\n\nHis writing has been nominated for three National Magazine Awards\, nine Western Magazine Awards\, and five British Columbia Jack Webster Awards for journalism. He’s won WMAs for business\, science\, and public issues writing\, and won two Websters for community reporting. In 2016-17\, he co-founded and was a senior researcher and editor for Inner Compass Initiative and The Withdrawal Project\, websites which provide information about psychiatric drugs and how to withdraw from them more safely. In 2023\, BenBella released his bookYour Consent Is Not Required: The Rise in Psychiatric Detentions\, Forced Treatment\, and Abusive Guardianships. which recounts people’s experiences of psychiatric detentions and involuntary commitment\, and critically examines the science\, economics\, politics\, and expanding uses of psychiatric legal powers across North America. \n\n\n\nHe has also worked as an instructor in creative nonfiction and journalism at the University of Victoria and Royal Roads University. \n\n\n\nOver the years\, he has occasionally done contract research\, writing and/or editing for organizations that are working to protect fish and wildlife habitat\, including the Conservation Lands Program\, Nature Trust\, Ducks Unlimited\, and Habitat Conservation Trust Foundation\, and for groups fostering grassroots community resilience such as Hey Neighbour Collective. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\nRegister Now

SUMMARY:Compassionate Accountable Conversations Training (Wed\, Thurs\, Fri)
DESCRIPTION:The Wildflower Alliance is excited to host a Compassionate Accountable Conversations training provided by Growing a New Heart. In our work of supporting healing and empowerment for communities and people who have been impacted by various life-interrupting challenges\, we sometimes engage in conversations about harm and accountability. These conversations are not easy\, and we know that they are also incredibly important. This training is one step in our process to explore and refine our approach to when we are supporting someone who is doing harm in their relationships\, or being asked to intervene in harm that has happened between community members. \n\n\n\nT he training will be held on the following dates: \n\n\n\n\nWednesday\, January 24th\n\n\n\nThursday\, January 25th\n\n\n\nFriday\, January 26th\n\n\n\n\nAll days will be scheduled for 9:00am-1:00pm Eastern USA time (8am to 12pm Central\, 7am to 11am Mountain\, 6am to 10am Pacific) and held on Zoom. \n\n\n\nAbout the training: \n\n\n\nThe Compassionate Accountable Conversations framework is the foundation for the A Call for Change Helpline intervention\, the anonymous and confidential helpline for people who use force and control in their intimate partnerships. This 3-day learning intensive will support people in learning how to hold transformative conversations based in compassion and accountability. \n\n\n\nThe training facilitators recognize that everyone coming to this training has unique wisdom\, experience and insight that can be a source of learning for the group as a whole. All of your skills and experience are valued here.We ask that you commit to participating fully in all three sessions\, and confirm that you have the availability to participate before you register. \n\n\n\nThe training series will be structured to cover the following different focal points each day: \n\n\n\nDay One is laying the foundations. We will explore the frameworks we use for understanding uses of force in relationships and how these are connected to abusive values\, socialization\, unresolved trauma and the continuum of substance use. We will begin to practice the use of 15 skills that are effective when faced with manipulation patterns related to dominance—but that do not replicate dominance. \n\n\n\nDay Two we examine how we assess risk\, the roles we take on in these interventions\, and how those relate to our social location. We examine the Process of Change\, Use of Force by gender\, and begin to explore the 12 strategies we practice in-depth in our last day. \n\n\n\nDay Three we cultivate our Field of Peace before we engage with 9 interrupters\, 15 skills\, and 12 strategies. Then we practice\, practice. We close with our own (lighthearted) practice with Accountable Apologies. \n\n\n\nThese days are designed for interaction throughout. Please do your best to find a place where you can talk freely in small and large groups. We welcome your animal companions and your coffee and snacks. We want you to feel supported in this process of unlearning and learning to gain new tools and skills around navigating conflict and repair in your life and communities. \n\n\n\nFor more information on Growing a New Heart\, check out their website here: https://growinganewheart.org/ \n\n\n\nFor more information on A Call for Change Helpline: https://acallforchangehelpline.org/ \n\n\n\n\nRegister Now
